UV Applications in the Oil and Gas Industry
Some bacteria, such as SRBs, can perform and grow in anaerobic conditions and water. They can generate unwanted products like H2S and FeS if they are in the water injected into the oil well for extraction. On the other hand, the growth of these bacteria inside pipes and fittings causes significant damages to pipelines and compromises the quality of oil and its sourness. Under the extreme conditions of the oil extraction site, it is naturally impossible to use any disinfectant other than UV radiation to remove and prevent these microorganisms’ destructive effects.
Note that UV devices designed for such environments are corrosion-resistant and often display a higher efficiency in disinfecting freshwater because of high water hardness and other special conditions.
